Are Facials Worth It?

hydrates your skin

A facial is essentially a multi-step treatment which cleanses, exfoliates and hydrates your skin. Some luxe facials will also offer extended massage and additional treatments such as microdermabrasion. Your skin care specialist might finish it off with serums infused with antioxidants and leave you feeling generally relaxed and refreshed. Regular facials can promote a smooth and clear complexion, but how often do we really need to get facials, if at all?

Skin care specialists will often recommend you have a facial every 3 – 4 weeks due to the cellular turnover rate. Cellular turnover is the shedding of dead skin cells, and the replacement of those dead skin cells with younger skin cells. Basically, it is the key to radiant skin. As we age, cellular turnover naturally slows down meaning you will want to reach for products and carry out practices which boost this turnover. Either way, if anti-aging is a priority for you, you will want to pay mind to products and practices that help to enhance cell turnover.

However, facials often don’t perform practices specific to anti-ageing as they are largely superficial and only focused on the upper layer of the skin. This is why they can give you a temporary glowing and revitalised appearance. If this is the reason you are curious about facials or are already regularly having them, you may want to rethink your appointments.

Microneedling stimulates your body’s own natural repair response which encourages cellular turnover and stimulates collagen regeneration. Collagen is a key factor in anti-ageing which we covered in a previous blog, you can read about it here. Two of our top selling pens, the A6 and the X5, are brilliant options for anyone looking to keep the signs of ageing at bay through regular microneedling treatments at home. Facials won’t give you a huge improvement in acne scarring.

However, people get facials for different reasons. If you’re looking for a reduction in blackheads and clogged pores, a facial with extraction will be amazingly beneficial. Some people also enjoy the relaxation aspect of a facial which can have a positive effect on stress levels which can contribute to premature ageing. Facials are a luxurious accompaniment to your skin care regime if you can afford to keep them up in conjunction with more specific skin care treatments.
