What is an LED Mask?

We are so excited to introduce our new products to our customers! One of these new products is an LED mask which offers some amazing benefits to your skin. If you’ve never heard of an LED mask before then keep reading because we’re about to explain what exactly they can do for you, as well as why they are the perfect companion for you to use in conjunction with your microneedling treatments with Dr Pen.

What is an LED Mask?

You could be forgiven for assuming an LED mask is a prop straight off the set of Star Wars, but in fact these funny looking masks aren't actually a stand-in for Darth Vader - but a wonderful at-home treatment for your skin!

An LED mask emits colour light therapy in specific wavelengths through tiny LED bulbs onto your face (UV-free). The lights helps to increase blood flow and stimulate collagen production, expedite healing, and reduce acne. Certain wavelengths have even been shown to reduce dark spots and uneven skin tone.

Until recently, you could only treat yourself to light therapy at a skin clinic. However, light therapy is now becoming more readily available for home use through the use of LED masks created by mainstream brands. These masks are safe for home use and still provide the benefits of a salon treatment. Furthermore, research suggests LED treatments need to be repeated regularly to effectively treat the multitude of skin concerns it targets. This makes a home mask far more cost effective and convenient for most people who may not have the time or money to make regular appointments at a clinic for treatments. Light therapy at a clinic may be a little stronger than home-use LED masks, however, over time you will see similar results from regular application.

What is Light Therapy?

Light therapy, or LED treatments have been around for over 30 years and were originally developed for astronauts to help with tissue healing and repair, according to Dr Zamani of MZ Skin. And before you worry about the UV levels of LED lights - the spectrum of light used is UV-free and there's no risk of damage.

How Does Light Therapy Work?

Dermatologist Dr Dennis Gross says, “LED therapy uses light in the visible spectrum – including blue, yellow, amber and red – as well as light beyond the visible spectrum to penetrate different depths of skin. As the light wavelength increases, so does the depth of penetration.” This light is absorbed by receptors in the skin, just like topical skincare, and each colour of light stimulates a different response in the skin. For example, the red light is for collagen production and healing, while the blue light is for destroying acne bacteria. LED is suitable for all skin types and tones.

Benefits of Light Therapy

One of the main benefits of LED therapy is the lack of downtime and discomfort. LED therapy also activates your skin’s natural healing processes, making it a perfect companion to your microneedling treatments! After microneedling, your skin will be a little red and flakey for a few days, particularly when you are using the deeper needle lengths. Using an LED mask post-treatment will speed up this healing process and clear your redness and micro-wounds at an accelerated rate.

Other benefits of regular use of LED masks include:

  • Plumped, glowing skin
  • Fewer fine lines and sagging skin
  • Faster healing of acne and reduced inflammation
  • Blue rays are proven to kill acne-causing bacteria by up to 80%
  • Decreased acne breakouts

Our LED masks will be available from Monday, August 30th. If you have any questions, please get in touch with us here.
